SHORE AC XC MEET RESCHEDULED FOR SUNDAY NOV. 13TH.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The 38th Annual Shore Athletic Club Open Cross Country Meet - originally set for Oct. 30 but weathered-out by the storm that battered the Northeast that weekend - has been rescheduled for Sunday, November 13th, 2011, at Ocean County Park in Lakewood, N.J.

All runners are invited to the meet, which includes seven races for competitors of all ages, and rewards top 10 finishers in each race with trophies. Entries will be happily accepted until the starting time of each event.

The program starts with the Open 5K Run at 9:30 am, and continues with the first of six age-group events at 10:30 am. These will be the boys 9-under 1.5-mile run at 10:30, the girls 1.5-mile run at 10:45, boys 10-11 1.5-mile run at 11, girls 1.5-mile run at 11.15, boys 2-mile run at 11.30, and girls 2-mile run at 11.50,

Hayes Medal in Hands of American Running Royalty

I took the Johnny Hayes medal up to New York City to show it to Camille Herron. While you probably don't know her, she just finished ninth in the Pan-Am Games Marathon. She's running New York tomorrow and will be running the Olympic Trials at Houston in January.

Here's Camille with the 1908 Olympic Marathon gold medal. Of course, some of you may say, "She's not running royalty yet." Perhaps your right, sooo....

What about Desiree Davila? She took second at Boston this year, posting a 2:22:38. I'm pretty sure that classes as running royalty.

Ms. Davila was making an appearance at Paragon Sports when I managed to meet up with her. Still not good enough for you?

What about Ryan Hall?
I believe Hall has run the fastest marathon by an American with his fourth place finish at Boston this year, posting a 2:04:58. I think that may well make him the king of American Marathoners, at least for now.

POSTPONED!!! - We hope to get a date to hold the meet - we're looking at the possibility of November 13. We'll keep you posted. The decision came from the park that icy conditions made it unsafe. - 7:10AM

Update: 7:00AM - the park rep had not arrived at the park as I spoke to race director Elliott Denman a few minutes ago. We're sorry to be keeping you in limbo. Expect word very shortly.

As of right now, we're planning to go forward with tomorrow's cross-country meet as scheduled. Ocean County Park has promised a decision about whether the park will be closed by approximately 6:30 AM. There are several places where we will be posting information about the meet. You may also call (732) 222-9080 to get recorded information about the meet's status. I will be adding links etc. over the next few hours to give a variety of places you may check. Due to the risk of communication problems due to power outages, please check more than one until you receive definitive information.

Banquet 2010 - Recognizing 2009's Achievements

Awards are only listed for recipients who attended the banquet. Awards are listed by last name with the Hall of Fame following at the end.

We were celebrating completion of the club's 75th year - 1934 is the generally accepted year of the Shore AC's founding (though there are references to its having been founded a year or two earlier). This cake was dessert following the buffet dinner.

Bob Andrews (second from left) was awarded the coach of year primarily for work with his son, Robby, now running at the University of Virginia. He called up his wife, high school coach, Bill Welsh (camel jacket), and George Kochman, who'd been an influence on his coaching.

Tom Cawley was named Comeback Athlete of the Year.

Diane Cismowski received a Get Up and Go Award. Diane is pictured with club president Walter MacGowan.

Christine Clifton won both the Elliott Denman Award and President's Award, the first time anyone's won both the same year.

Farnese DaSilva was awarded the George Sheehan Memorial Award as Men's Distance Runner of the Year.

Jill Evarts won the Mary Conry Memorial Award as Women's Distance Runner of the year.

Paul G. Gaffney II, President of Monmouth University and a graduate of the US Naval Academy, was awarded the Wisner Brothers Award for Distinguished Service to the Sport of Track and Field.

The Hill Family was awarded the Tom and Phyllis Fyfe Award as Family of the Year. Dick Hill accepted on behalf of his family, which across 3 generations numbers 15 or 16 runners.

Patty and David Hitman were awarded a Get Up and Go Award.

Larry Kalb was recipient of the first Ken Williamson Memorial Award for Dedication to Officiating.

Neni Lewis received the Irwin Bernstein Award for Masters Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Her exceptional throwing keeps her in the top ranks nationally. She's pictured here with her coach Goran Milanovich?.

Art Noland received the Chris Malone Memorial Award as Men's Masters Runner of the Year.

Preznack Nowicki was, at age 65, awarded Rookie of the Year on the men's side.

Brian O'Dowd earned Boys' High School Athlete of the Year.

Ben Ottmer earned the Don Johnson Memorial Award as Masters Racewalker of the Year.

Erin Taylor was awarded the Don and Marie Henry Memorial Award as Women's Racewalker of the Year. Dave Talcott was named recipient of the William Funkhouser Memorial Award as Men's Racewalker of the Year. Dave and Erin recently became engaged.

Kerri Walker, who coaches at Rumson-Fair Haven High School, was Womens' Rookie of the Year.

Glenn Weaver, an excellent javelin thrower and Jersey City fireman, was recognized as Humanitarian of the Year. As is typical of Glenn, he said a few words about those who serve who don't come home, including firefighters, police and armed service members. Mr. Weaver was among the first responders on September 11.

A'Jee Wilson was selected as Girls' High School Athlete of the Year.

Elliott and Jo Denman were honored with cake cutting duties. Elliott's been one of the club's guiding hands since its reestablishment in the early 1960's. Jo's been supportive of Elliott's efforts through the years.

HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Marc Anderson, now sprints coach at Princeton University, was inducted into Shore AC's Hall of Fame for his achievements. He told a story about being trapped in the Hotel New Yorker lobby prior to a relay at the Millrose Games, and 3 of the four athletes had gotten there, but as time closed in, the athletes wanted to change, there was no sign of the fourth, and they didn't dare leave in these pre-cell phone days. If you want the rest, you'll have to ask the coach for the rest of the story.

Curt Clausen, America's leading racewalker of the late 1990's and early 2000's was also inducted to the Hall of Fame. Mr. Clausen represented the USA at three Olympics and won a bronze medal at the World Championships in 1999.

Ralph Garfield, a long-time club member who ran in the inaugural New York City Marathon brought along a clipping from the Daily News and his trophy from that race. Close examination will reveal that's Ralph pictured at the bottom left of the clipping.

Milton Goode, who high jumped for Monmouth Regional High School and went on to jump at the 1984 Olympics was also inducted.

Dudley Dorival was also inducted. His coaching duties kept him from attending.

Special thanks go to the Mendina children whose expert help enabled Christine Clifton to run the silent auction efficiently.

A Couple Of Guys Visit Queen's (Palace)

At the end of May, Walter MacGowan, club president, and Elliott Denman, lifetime trustee, travelled with Johnny Hayes' gold medal to Windsor Castle to attend a reception arrangged by the British Olympic Committee and the London Marathon. Mr. Hayes Goes To Toronto

I saw him before I heard the call, "Mr. Hayes." I replied, "Mr. Hayes." So began our walk together. Kurt Steege had just walked back from the finish line of the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. I was dragging myself in to a 6:11 finish; while Kurt, just cruising, had finished in 3:52, after having taken a big detour to call attention of officials to a woman down on the course.

Kurt had run this as an overdistance run in preparation for the Marine Corps Marathon a month later. Kurt was dressed as Johnny Hayes, the 1908 Olympic Marathon winner, as was I. We'd been invited up to Toronto to bring up Johnny Hayes' gold medal along with his 3rd place trophy from the 1907 Boston Marathon.

While Hayes finished better at Boston (2nd) the next year, the 1907 trophy has a special tie to Toronto. Tom Longboat, Canada's finest runner of the era hailed from hearby. Longboat was an Onandaga Indian from the Six Nations Reserve about an hour west of Toronto. Plans had called for his daughter, Phyllis Winney, to have attended along with his Boston Trophy, which is held at the Woodlands Cultural Center. Unfortunately, at the last minute, this part of the plan fell apart.

The third major player in Toronto's presentation of the story of how the marathon came to be 26.2 miles was Dorando Pietri. Dorando's struggles to finish the marathon at the 1908 Olympics had prompted Queen Alexandra to give him a special cup. That cup had been brought to Toronto by Carlo Gabbi and his wife, Luisa Ricco, bringing those relics together for public display for just the second time since they were given a century ago. (The first was earlier this year at the Flora London Marathon.)

After the marathon, Kurt and I flew home together. We both had some fun teasing each other about how badly we were both walking. I'm pretty sure I was worse. Kurt is slated to be running Marine Corps next weekend. If you see him, please wish him well.

By the way, my 6:11 was planned as a 5:45 to 6:00. I'd guessed at that kind of time based on Elliott Denman's past performances at the NY City Marathon. Elliott has rarely crossed to the slow side of 6 hours in his recent New York performances. I figured I could post a number that would match the man with a quarter century on me, I wasn't to be. I have even more respect for him after seeing how tough walking a 6-hour marathon can be.

National 5km & One Hour Racewalk Championships

October is a busy month on the National Racewalk Championship calendar. First up was the National 5km Championship in Kingsport, TN on October 4. Panse Geer, 5000m RW Champ and silver in the 10km RW in W60 at the 2008 National Masters Track & Field Championships, continued her age group leading ways by finishing 9th overall, 1st W60 in 30:16.

The following week action shifted to the Bentley College track in Waltham, MA for the National One Hour Racewalk. Dave Talcott had covered 11,131m when time was called, good enough for third and first master. Dave was coming off a win at the USATF-Metropolitan 25km Racewalk on September 21. Unfortunately, Waltham was not as hospitable to Panse Geer as she ran afoul of the judges and was disqualified.

October 26 will bring the last of the month's National Championships, this time in Hauppauge, NY to cover 30km. The Shore AC men's racewalk team will look to better last year's team silver medal.

I shot a few pictures at last night's race, a two-mile not counting in the season's scoring.

Jimmy Leslie passed by doing the "don't shoot me, I've already finished" thing.

Closer examination reveals another reason why Mr. Leslie is smiling, his place card bears a "1."

100 Years of the Marathon Distance

I had the pleasure of being invited to bring Johnny Hayes' gold medal, which the Shore A.C. holds, to Carpi, Italy as part of the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Marathon Distance.
I arrived on early in the afternoon of Wednesday, July 22, in Carpi, a small city in the Emilia Romana region of Italy, and close to Modena. Those of you who are food fans likely recognize the names - Modena is famous for balsamic vinegar, and the local cheese is the legendary Parmagiano Reggiano, while the local wine is a light, sparkling, red Lambrusco. Needless to say, the food was excellent, as I've found it to be throughout Italy.
Shortly after arriving, I headed over to an Olympic athlete's event, and suddenly photographers were taking photos of me. It was only when they looked disappointed when I told them who I was that I found out they thought I was the representative from the London Marathon. I sat there and tried to look interested, but lacking a translator (she was with the London rep) and not speaking Italian, I was pretty much lost until they started the films of races. Good running is easy to watch in any language.
I'd passed under this banner as I walked into town. It identifies Thursday, July 24, 2008 as World Centennial Day. Of course, their marking of this anniversary bears an Italian flavor, so Dorando Pietri is featured.
That evening, there was a concert in the big square in town. It was a lot of fun, and I went back to the hotel exhausted, having slept only intermittently during my overnight flight.
The next morning, I had breakfast and headed over to the Duomo on Piazza Martiri, where they were celebrating a high mass in honor of Dorando. If you look at the left side of the photo, in the shadows, you can see the umbrellas of Bar Roma, a cafe, which was the sight of the bakery where Dorando worked before rising to fame as a runner.
Next on the agenda was the opening of an exhibit in Pio Castle dedicated to Dorando. This band played an introduction, then Nicola Okey of the London Marathon and I both said a few words before assisting with ribbon cutting.
We were then loaded onto buses and driven to a local park where one of the roads was named Via Maratona Olimpica Londra 1908 (Olympic Marathon of London 1908 Way). Nicola, as the London Marathon representative was also presented with a medal.
Next on the agenda was the dedication of the statue of Dorando, entitled "la vittoria e di Dorando" (The Victory of Dorando), and while Dorando did not win the Olympic gold, he certainly won many hearts with his struggle. The base of the statue is decorated with mosaics, on one side is Dorando's finish at London; on the other, modern racers. Pietri is wearing his trademark red shorts, perhaps he was a Rutgers fan.
Gelindo Bordin, the 1988 gold medalist in the marathon, holds Johnny Hayes' gold medal as 1960 200 meter gold medalist Livio Berruti and the Bishop of Carpi hold Dorando's Cup at the dedication of the statue to Dorando Pietri. RAI broadcast this event throughout Italy.
Following the Olympic Marathon, both Hayes and Dorando turned pro, and their first rematch was this race run through a haze of cigarette smoke at Madison Square Garden, which Dorando won. A string of other races followed, all at the 26 mile, 385 yard distance, making that distance the perceived "right" distance of a marathon.

Johnny Hayes Inducted Into Hall of Fame

Doris Hale was a longtime friend of the Shore Athletic Club. One of the things she did before she passed away was to leave her father's collection of running memorabilia to the club, with the understanding that it be used to perpetuate his memory. This past Saturday, as a result of some actions by members of the club, her father, Johnny Hayes, was inducted into the National Distance Running Hall of Fame in Utica, NY. Mr. Hayes had won the Olympic Marathon in 1908, in what is often regarded as the most dramatic and influential marathon in history. We were honored to have Frank Shorter, the next American to win Olympic Marathon gold, accept the award on Mr. Hayes' behalf. Also inducted were Amby Burfoot, winner of the 1968 Boston Marathon, and Priscilla Welch, most noted as a world-class masters runner.

Mr. Shorter spoke briefly on Mr. Hayes' legacy. The local paper described the ceremony here and here.

Penn Relays - Racewalks

Opening Saturday's competition at the Penn Relays was the men's 10,000m racewalk. Shore AC's Rich Leuttchau took the lead from the gun and never relinquished it, taking the coveted Penn watch with a personal best 46:33.03. Rich expected close competition from second placer Theron Kissinger, but it never developed as his lead grew to about 300 m by the end of the race. Rich had the following to say about his race: "I felt good and smooth through the whole thing, I was really happy and really surprised. I knew that I had a chance to win with Boyles and none of the other big names going, but I didn't expect to lead the whole race. It was a great feeling with a mile to go knowing that, barring doing something stupid, that I would win. I was really happy."
Also enjoying success in this race was Dave Talcott. Dave faced a challenge from Doug Johnson for the masters title before Johnson's two red cards caused him to slow. Dave's 52:12.06 gave him 4th overall in addition to the masters gold.
In the women's 5000m racewalk, Panse Geer competed against a field much her junior to finish as second master. Her excellent 29:52.67 was a track best, just two seconds off her road personal best set in 2005, and quicker than her bronze medal winning race at last years World Masters Championships. Panse looks to be in position to defend her National Masters title this summer in Spokane.

43rd Annual Capt. Ron Zinn Memorial Races

Under cloudy skies and with temperatures in the 50s, the 43rd edition of the races to honor the memory of two time US Olympian Captain Ron Zinn, and all the men and women killed in Vietnam, were held today in Wall Township, NJ. A West Point grad, Captain Zinn competed in the 20km racewalk at the 1960 and 1964 Olympics before his death in Vietnam.

In the opening 5km run, Brian Hill and Rich Caponigro ran closely together until late in the race. After taking the lead, Caponigro made a wrong turn off the course which allowed Brian Hill to go by. Hill slowed near the finish to cross with Caponigro, both in 18:32. Hill was credited with the win. Third went to Bob Miller in 18:58 with Tom Resch 4th, 1st Vietnam Veteran in 21:24. Christine Hill led the women in 25:14, followed by Becky Cegielski (26:21) and Dona Romeu (28:40).

John Soucheck took the lead from Dave Talcott early in the 10km racewalk and built his lead for the win. Panse Geer was unchallenged in the women's race. The racewalk results:

Shore AC Masters Women Take Second Place in 4x400m Relay at Millrose Games

The Shore AC women's team ran a terrific race February 1 at the Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden and brought excitement back into the women's masters 4x400, finishing second in 4:45.37. They gave Athena track club, the world record holder and meet record holder in the event, great competition. Shore women were led off by Dawn Littlejohn, who ran aggressively at the front throughout her leg and set up a nice lead on the field and handed off to Kathleen Clifton, who continued to hold off Athena through the first half of the race. Barbara Brennan, just coming back on the track and filling in at the last minute, ran a solid third leg, well ahead of the other three teams in the race. Jan Vaughn, having nursed an injury for a few weeks, anchored the team to a strong second place showing--putting more distance between Shore and the remaining three teams.

I would like to thank my teammates--Dawn, Kathleen, Barbara , Jan and Theresa for their effort not only in running but--and special thanks to Tony Plaster for all his time and support--for joining in helping me realize one of my goals to have a Shore women's team take their place back on the Millrose track.

RRCA National Volunteer Awards were given by RRCA state rep Dave DeMonico to three very deserving and outstanding gentlemen – Frank Haviland, Lester Wright and Elliott Denman.

Phil Benson, race director of the Asbury Park 10K Classic, was also inducted to the Shore A.C. Hall of Fame.

Hoyle Mozee moseyed (sorry, I had to do it!) up to accept his Hall of Fame award for his many years of service to the club.

Charlie Rooney accepted the plaque putting his late father, Charlie, into the Shore A.C. Hall of Fame. The elder Charlie was long-time mayor of Sea Bright and a fine athlete, he assisted the club in many ways with staging races.

SAC Masters Men LDR Salute JL Seymore and USATF-NJ Winners

This was an exciting weekend for Shore AC Athletes.

Running Times named J.L. Seymore honorable mention National Masters Runner of the Year for the competitive 60-64 age group. JL is one of only three New Jersey runners selected by Running Times. Seymore had a dramatic impact on SAC Masters by leading the 60s team to place second and the the 50s team third in the USATF New Jersey LDR Championship Team Grand Prix, finishing First Shore AC for both 50s and 60s teams in all five major races. His age-graded PLP was consistently in the mid to high 80s!

70 plus Race Horse legends Dick Hill and Ralph Garfield were also honored on Saturday night at the USATF New Jersey Awards Banquet for their outstanding year of distance running. They came in first and second respectively in the 70-74 age group, and along with Leonard, Mc Donnell and Richardson led the SAC Masters 70s team to a First Place in the USATF NJ Long Distance Running Championship Team Grand Prix. The Grand Prix demands high-level performance for road and cross country races ranging from 5K to 13.1 miles. SAC Masters 50s leaders Dave Hoch (2006 USATF Grand Prix award winner) and Richard Henderson (2005 USATF Grand Prix award winner) can attest to this.
Our Track and Walk athletes were also big winners at the banquet. Shore AC legend Harry Nolan was named Masters Track & Field Athlete of the Year (he also won in 1997). John Soucheck was USATF-NJ racewalking grand prix winner for the 11th consecutive year and Maria Paul won for her 3rd year in a row. Shore AC also dominated the Masters Track and Field Grand Prix with several winners including double winners Wendi Glassman (50s sprints and distance) and Leon Trout (70s throws and jumps).

Wendi Glassman runs 800 in 2:54, great start for 2008 and John Kuhi completes the 800 in 3:01. Dave Zurheide runs 3000 in 11:15, just edged out by Reesi Caffrey (Atlantic Highlands) who now resides in Manhattan and runs for CPTC. Ted Corbitt

One of the real giants of our sport, Ted Corbitt, has passed away. Ted was one of the founding fathers of the NY Road Runners and also of the Road Runners Club of America. He was on the 1952 Olympic Marathon Team and literally wrote the book on course measurement. Mr. Corbitt, who lived in New York City, was 87 years old.

National 30km Racewalk Championships

Shore AC's three man team came up just short in the battle for the team title at the National 30km Racewalk Championships, held October 28 in windy Hauppauge, NY. Scored on the basis of overall time, Pegasus of Michigan just edged Shore AC, 8:47:26 to 8:48:40. Varsano's Chocolates Racewalking followed closely at 8:53:35 for third. Shore's Rich Leuttchau, in his first race longer than 20km, was among the early leaders, hitting 10km in 48:40 before struggling due to a foot injury. Rich hung in there to finish in 2:48:02 for 8th place, 5th US. John Soucheck slowed over the last 10km feeling the effects of his recent 50km Olympic Trials qualifying effort for a 2:43:17, 7th place, 4th US, 1stM40 finish. Rounding out the team was Tom Quattrochi , whose 3:17:21 garnered him 2nd in M55.

National 5km Racewalk

Panse Geer, coming off her fine performance at the World Masters Championships, was first W60 and 20th woman overall at the USATF National 5km Racewalk Championships in Kingsport, TN on October 6. The next weekend, she followed that up with another age group win and 9th woman at the National One Hour Racewalk Championship in Waltham, MA. Panse covered 9,593m when time was called.

John Fredericks also competed in Kingsport. His 29:09 was good for 16th in the men's race, 3rd in M55. John was coming off the USATF 40km Racewalk hosted by Shore AC, where he contributed to Shore AC's second place team finish. More details on that race at www.shoreac.org under the USATF40k tab.

The Greatest Race Ever

As some people tell it, the greatest marathon ever was run on July 23, 1908. In that race, an unheralded American ran from Windsor Castle to the Olympic Stadium at Shepherd's Bush, London faster than all but one other runner. The runner who arrived at the stadium first, collapsed on the track several times, and was eventually assisted across the finish line by race officials. This Italian, named Dorando Pietri, was helped in order to prevent the American Olympic team from gathering another gold medal. The effort ensured Pietri's fate. Had he managed to get to his feet under his own power (most authorities doubt this would have been possible), he might have gotten there ahead of the American. Instead, two hours after being declared the winner, officials disqualified Pietri for receiving aid, and the American, Johnny Hayes was declared the winner.
Hayes' daughter, Doris Hayes Hale was a long-time friend of the Shore Athletic Club. Mrs. Hale gave her collection of her father's memorabilia to the Shore A.C. in her will. One of the real treasures from the collection, her father's Olympic gold medal is currently on display in New York. The National Jewelry Insitute has put together a exhibition of Olympic gold medals and other athlete memorabilia, which is on display at the Forbes Gallery through late December. Hayes' medal is the oldest in the exhibit.
We believe this is the first time the medal has been displayed to the general public. Hayes' medal has been shown occasionally to school children through the years. Next month represents the centennial of Hayes first victory in a major marathon, the Mercury A.C. Marathon. It was a race designated as 25 miles, and became the Yonkers Marathon. The Yonkers Marathon served for many years as the marathon national championship race, it also served as an Olympic selection race several times. Hayes' Olympic Marathon victory was the first race run at the now standard distance of 26 miles, 385 yards (42.195 km), and in an odd coincidence, Hayes wore number 26 in the race.
We hope that many club members and others will take advantage of the opportunity to visit this remarkable exhibit.

World Masters Track & Field Championships - Racewalks

Shore AC's Panse Geer earned two W60 bronze medals at the World Masters Track & Field Championships in Riccione, Italy. Panse clocked a 29:58.6 in the 5000m racewalk and a 1:02:09 for the 10km racewalk. This followed her double gold medal effort (5000m racewalk and 10km road racewalk) in W60 at the US Masters Track & Field Championships, which was held in Orono, ME back in early August.
Bob Mimm also continued to churn out the miles in Riccione, finishing 5th M80 in the 10km event (1:17:49).

Shore Athletic Club Takes Team Titles at Club Championships as 11 Meet Records Fall

NEW YORK - The Shore Athletic Club of New Jersey swept the men's and women's team titles amid tough competition last weekend at the seventh annual USATF National Club Track & Field Championships at Icahn Stadium in New York City.
Both titles came down to the 4x400-meter relay, the last event of the competition, and both ended up being narrow victories for Shore over hometown favorite and defending men's team champion Executive Track Club (Metropolitan).
Led by Obra Hogans' victories in the 200m and 400m, Shore AC's men tallied 153 points, with Executive TC five points back with 147. VS Athletics (Southern California) scored in 16 of the 23 events to finish a strong third with 110 points. Greater Boston Track Club (New England), the 2002 men's champions, finished fourth with 55 points and Club Northwest from Washington scored 50 points to round out the top five.
Hogans also anchored the Shore AC 4x400m relay to a dramatic victory. His 20 individual points were the most scored by any male athlete during the two days of competition, earning him the Most Valuable Male Athlete award.
In the women's competition, Shore AC benefited from the 30 points scored by 46-year old Oneithea Lewis, outscoring Executive Track Club 123 points to 119. Also a national champion in masters competition, Lewis won the shot put, discus and hammer throw to lead her club.
"We ranged from distinguished Olympian to superb masters athletes to current collegians and high school athletes," said Shore AC club administrator Elliott Denman of the club's performance. "We had athletes as young as 14 and as experienced as 60 years of age. We competed as a family, and really were a family with two father-son combinations."
Nike Central Park TC finished third with 94 points. Greater Boston TC ended the day with 87 points to match their men in claiming fourth place and, Norfolk Real Deal (Virginia) was fifth with 76 points. Two-time NCAA indoor triple jump champion Yvette Lewis of Norfolk Real Deal was Most Valuable Female Athlete, scoring 37 points. She won the triple jump and 100 meters, took second in the 200, was fourth in the long jump and tied for fourth in the high jump.
More than 450 athletes from 67 clubs and 21 states competed in the two-day event. With entries for the meet at an all time high, 11 meet records were broken. Championship records established on the men's side included performances in the following events: 1500m (3:54.03, Robert Duncan - KC Smoke), 110m hurdles (13.70, Justin Lindsey - Shore AC), 400m hurdles (49.60, Adrian Findlay - Executive TC), High Jump (2.21 meters/7 feet 3 inches, Joe Kindred - Executive TC), Triple Jump (16.12m/52-10.75, Ryon Taylor - Nike Central Park TC), Sprint Medley Relay (1:29.29 , U.S. Elite International).
On the women's side, five championship records were established: 400m (51.94, Aliann Pompey - Shore AC), 800m (2:03.94, Neisha Bernard-Thomas - U.S. Elite International), 3000m Steeplechase (10:08.80, Dawn Cromer - Pacers /Brooks), Triple Jump (12.43m/40-9.50, Sherita Williams - Greater Boston TC), Sprint Medley Relay (1:29.29 , U.S. Elite International).
The top men's performance, based on the IAAF scoring tables, went to Adrian Findlay of Executive TC for winning the 400m Hurdles in 49.60. On Monday, English Author John Bryant visited New Jersey to take a look at the Shore Athletic Club's Johnny Hayes Collection. Mr. Bryant is researching a forthcoming book and is seen in this photograph commenting on Hayes' autograph book as club president Walter MacGowan looks on. The book contains autographs of many athletic greats of a century ago. Next year marks the centennial of Hayes' victory in the 1908 Olympic Marathon, comsidered a landmark race by many authorities on the sport.

NATIONAL 10KM RACEWALK TEAM CHAMPS

On June 2, the Shore AC racewalk team took to the pavement of Niagara Falls for the National 10km Racewalk Championships for Senior men and women. In hot, humid conditions, the walkers faced eight loops of the 1250m course on Goat Island. Rich Luettchau walked an excellent 47:53 for third place to lead the Shore AC team to victory. Many walkers slowed in the second half, but Rich was strong the whole way through. John Soucheck contributed a 52:01 in 8th, 2nd M40-44 and Dave Talcott won the M45-49 in 55:30. Shore totaled 2:35:24 for the 3 man team. Pegasus from Michigan (2:44:43) edged out Niagara Walkers (2:45:07) for 2nd. Matt Boyles took the men's win in 42:48 with Olympian Teresa Vaill the women's champ.

Tim Brennan, coach of our National Team spoke about the team and the upcoming USATF Nationals. He also updated us on the exploits of this year's Johnny Hayes Memorial Award winner as Male Athlete of the Year, high jumper Tora Harris, and of the Bob Roggy Memorial Award as 2006's Male Field Athlete of the Year, Tuan Wreh.

Coach Jim Schlentz spoke about this year's High School Athletes of the Year, Craig Forys, who Jim coaches, and Danielle Tauro of Southern Regional.

Craig Forys said a few words as he accepted his award.

High jumper Andre Davis was recognized with a Rodney Craig Memorial Award as Male Youth Athlete of the Year (2006).

Our Female Youth Athlete of the Year (2006), miler Ajee Wilson, also received a Rodney Craig Memorial Award.

Mike Chirico and Christine Clifton of Shore Runner in Long Branch were recognized with a Friend of the Club Award for their support of Shore AC events during 2006. Christine Clifton also received the Mary Conroy Memorial Award as Female Distance Runner of the Year.

Liela Bernstein presents the Irwin Bernstein Masters Athlete of the Year Award to hurdler Phil Bujalski.

Dave DeMonico presented RRCA Volunteer Awards to Isabel Keeley and Donna Cetrulo.

Jeremy Pilkington received the Dr. George Sheehan Memorial Award as the 2006 Men's Distance Runner of the Year.

Shot putter and discus thrower Nicholas Price won the Rookie of the Year for 2006.

Lauren Rhatigan, pictured here with Shore AC president Walter MacGowan, was recognized for several reasons, among them her participation of the team of the Year, the Women's Masters Team, who won the National Masters Cross-Country title at Saratoga Springs, NY. The team consisted of Jill Evarts, Lauren Rhatigan, Christine Gaeta, Liz Ludwigson, and Chris Murphy. Rhatigan also won the Chris Malone Memorial Award as Master Female Distance Runner of the Year (2006). Lauren didn't wear her trademark red shorts to the banquet, but was quick to point out her dress contained red.

The Don Johnson Memorial Award as Masters Male Racewalker of the Year (2006) was given to Tom Quattrocchi.

Maria Paul captured the Don & Marie Henry Award as Female Racewalker of the Year (2006).

Rich Luettchau received the Matthew Stuper Memorial Award for Open Racewalker of the Year (2006).

Sandy Kalb was made an honorary lifetime trustee of Shore AC. He was a standout at Lakewood High School, ran for "Mr. Wisner" back in the 1950's, and has served NJ's track and field scene as an official for decades.

Millrose Masters Mens 4x400

100th Millrose Games, Friday February 2,2007. SAC was in a very competitve race and missed 4th place by a mere .02 seconds.
SAC Masters 3:44.45. The following as told by the Rick Lapp, the Senior on the team.
Leadoff was fun. Lots of bumbing hips and elbows, particularly with the 2nd Wind team member who I train with every Sunday. But that is all part of running the boards. Pat did his job well, getting us into the mix. It's amazing how his long legs can navigate the turns. Pat has amazing potential and gets faster every race. Keith continued to close. His stride lengthened and his strength was apparent. When his competitors began to fade, Keith appeared to get stronger. Bob showed poise and experience. He timed his race perfectly. He knew what he had to do and wasn't tempted to bust out too early. Bob ate up the yards and made his final move at just the right moment. Everyone thought he had nabbed 4th but the camera has the last word. It was close! Fun stuff. Lots of SAC support from Wendi, GP, JK, Friedman,and Elliott.

US 50km Racewalk Championships

On a near perfect Southern California day (January 28), Shore AC's John Soucheck walked to an 8th place US finish, 11th overall at the US 50km Racewalk. Held adjacent to Chula Vista's J Street Marina, site of the 2004 50km Racewalk Olympic Trials, the race selected US teams for the World Track and Field Championships, Pan Am Games, and the Pan Am Racewalk Cup. Soucheck began the race walking in a pack of 4 aiming for the 4:45:00 2008 US Olympic Trials qualifier. By the halfway mark, the pack was gone, one of the four already on the sidelines with the other two to join the first long before the finish. Soucheck was on pace through 34km before slowing to finish in 4:49:49. Norwegian Erik Tysse won in an Olympic and World Championship 'A' standard time of 3:57:35 followed closely by Ecuador's Javier Moreno. In his 50km debut, Kevin Eastler was third to take the US title in a 'B' standard 4:05:44.

Millrose Games Friday

For those of you who are dedicated road runners, you may not be aware that this Friday night the Millrose Games are taking place at Madison Square Garden. As most of you likely know, Millrose is probably the most historically prestigous indoor track meet in the country. It is home to the Wanamaker Mile, which is a really stacked race this year, featuring multi-time Wanamaker winner Bernard Lagat, American miling phenom Alan Webb, and Australian Craig Mottram. It will be interesting to see how Mottram, who dwarfs most distance runners, handles the tight 11 laps to the mile track at Madison Square Garden.

This is the 100th Millrose Games, so it's a milestone for the event. It also represents an important milestone for women at Millrose, with the first race in excess of a mile for the women being competed. The 3000 meter race (about 1.86 miles) will feature Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba.

The meet also features the top-ranked male and female pole vaulters in the world, along with the usual litany of sprint and hurdle stars. The shot put will also be competed there (it's the only throw that will fit in the Garden).

NYC Armory Thursday January 11, 2007. Several Shore AC Masters competed in the first of a series "Thursday Night at the Races hosted by NYRR. Three events per night, next race is January 25th, 7:00PM.
Mark Mellea 5:04.85, Barry Blake 6:20.52, and Harry Nolan 5:07.10 started the night off in the mile. Harry is on track for breaking the World and National record for the indoor mile. Dan Conway holds the mens 60-64 record of 5:01.76 which Harry hopes to break in Boston this March when he turns Sixty. In the 800, Tony Plaster 2:19.69, Nolan again in
2:22.54, Doug Bogert 2:31.22 , John Kuhi 2:51.33, and John Saarmann 2:51.86. Blake doubled also, running the 2 mile in 13:42.21.
Coach Mike Houlihan brought 2 Long Branch HS distance runners. Madaline Noe Schlentz appearded back in shape this year with a 5:25.36 mile. Rich Meyers of RVRR working on his track speed doubling in the mile, 5:39.45 and 800, 2:33.87. Rich has had a great XC season this year.
Next track meet for Shore AC Masters will be this Sunday 1/21/07, Jersey City Armory.

Shore AC Masters Kick Off Indoor Season

Holiday Classic Track Meet, Friday December 29th, NYC Armory.
With the 100th Millrose just around the corner several candidates for the Masters 4x400 jumped into the 400. Leading the field was Keith Davis in 53.66 FAT with Bob Andrews close behind in 55.81. Rich Wallace who will be age 50 in January ran 60.65. Rick Lapp entered his time from LI meet in 60.35. Keith Davis also ran the 200 in 24.18 and the 60 dash in 7.64.
In the Open 800, Robby Andrews kicked into second place in his heat with a 2:03.69. Robby a sophomore at Manalapan HS is playing basketball this season. Tony Plaster, who just turned age 55 this week and entered a new age group, ran 2:19.65 to start his season off well. John Kuhi ran 2:51.23 and won the "Oldest Guy in the Race" award. Dave Friedman was happy with his HJ of 4'4" as he competed in LJ, 3.18 meters, and a fine 200 in 34.24. In the 3000 Mark Mellea made a fine comeback from injury, missing most of XC season, running 10:07. Tom Resch making his rare Armory appearance ran the 3000 in 12:10. Tom is coaching at Manchester HS and brought some of his athletes to the Armory.

Polar Bear News

Pedro Espinosa of Freehold unleashed a powerful sprint finish in the final 100 meters to outduel Dickson Mercer of Fair Haven, 26:21 to 26:24, and win the men's five-mile run in the 43rd annual Asbury Park Polar Races on the boardwalk yesterday.

Rachel Provost of Millstone, state prep school cross country champion for Peddie School, retained her women's Polar Bear five-mile crown, clocking 30:34 to beat out Dianne DiOliveira of Point Pleasant (32:10) and Lauren Rhatigan of Ship Bottom (33.04)

The Polar Bear Races, first held in 1964, were again staged by Shore Athletic Club and sponsored by Oxford Health Plans.

Top honors in the co-featured Polar Bear 10-mile race walk went to John Soucheck of Little Silver (1:21.44) and Lisa Marie Vellucci of Staten Island (1:33.50.) Richard Stockton College senior Rich Luettchau walked the course in 1:18:33 but was 5:43 late for the start and placed second. A total of 295 athletes, aged 11 to 86, coming from seven states, took part.

National Masters 20km Racewalk

Shore Athletic Club of New Jersey racewalkers collected five gold medals, one silver and one bronze in the USA Track and Field Masters National Championship 20-kilometer racewalk Sunday (Nov. 12) in Clermont, Florida. The SAC team of John Fredericks (2:01:54), Tom Quattrocchi (2:04:41) and Ron Salvio (2:12:38) won the men's team title with a combined 6:18:45, clocking, besting Florida AC's 6:32:36. In addition, Fredericks, Quattrocchi and Salvio placed 1-2-3 in age 55-59 divisional scoring, and teammate Bob Mimm walked off with the 80-84 gold with a 2:39:48 performance
Also that day at the 96th annual New York Walkers Club 10-mile race on the Coney Island boardwalk in Brooklyn, Shore AC's Maria Paul won the women's 40-49 title and Elliott Denman won the men's 70-up divison.

A few of you may have noticed that a few places where Shore AC appears, a change has begun taking place, our slogan, "Promoting the Olympic Sport of Track and Field Since 1934" has started to show up with the date 1932. This is not an error. In reviewing some scrapbooks the club maintains, a 1946 reference by Art Wisner was found noting the club was founded in 1932. Because of this, a vote was held at the October 2006 Shore AC board meeting, and it was resolved that we would change the date to 1932. Thus, we now say, "Promoting the Olympic Sport of Track and Field Since 1932."

Thank you all for a great X-C season. The team race was really close this year. The Sandy Hookers re-emerged as a very strong team and it was good to see them win the overall championship. The Green’s Pond Harriers were a close second
(both teams had 3 wins, but Sandy Hook had better placing throughout the six race series). Hoboken, last year’s champs, were strong in third just ahead of Shore AC.
Jersey Shore Running Club was right behind and Freehold Area Running Club keeps improving in this tough field. I hope all the teams come back in 2007 and try again for the Woodland Elf Trophy.

I would like to give special thanks to Scott and Colleen York. They expertly worked the sign-in, start, finish, timing, and place recording. Without them the races wouldn’t have happened. Thanks to Jill Evarts for her assistance in marking the courses. And to Peter Avakian for his suggestions on course design. Thanks to Katherine Bazley for typing results and to Lisa Bazley who answers my email. Also, to Ali Belicose who was injured this year but was a big help at the finish line. SAC + FARC Incomplete teams

This was a race to remember! It rained hard all Friday night and by morning the winds were blowing out of the east at 40 to 50 mph. Jill Evarts and I marked the Thompson course late Friday afternoon. At that time it was 56 degrees and partly cloudy. Just as I placed the last flag it started to rain and I knew it was going to be worse on Saturday morning. Mike Tully met me at 7:30 am at Marlu lake with a large canopy tent. Our plan was to set it up and have a dry area for the officials and a place to hand out the pies and food after the race. However, the wind was blowing so hard we could not put it up. We then decided to face our van and SUV into the wind, lift our tailgate doors, and stretch a tarp over both vehicles. This actually worked well and, by the time the first runners arrived to sign up, we had a relatively dry refuge. I was worried that no one would show but my faith was restored when 73 hardy harriers toed the starting line. This group included the Red Bank Regional HS girls (and their coach – Terra Sarnacki). Earlier in the morning the Shore Conference XC Meet had been postponed due to severe conditions but here were these intrepid young women showing the toughness it takes to run cross country. If it were up to me I’d give them the Shore Conference Trophy.

Cross country runners are unlike most athletes. They actually savor foul conditions.
I heard a lot of laughter and cries of “All Right!” as we sloshed through the mud and slop formed by the torrential rain. After the race everyone seemed in great spirits as we huddled under our make-shift shelter sipping cider and eating donuts. No one seemed to mind that official times were not taken (our automatic timer does not like getting wet). Those who wanted to timed themselves. The leaders in the various age groups were awarded pies and packages of Delicious Orchards cookies. The Hoboken Harriers apparently didn’t get wet enough so they headed back out on the course to retrieve the flags.
I can recall only one other time in league history when the weather conditions rivaled what we had today. It was almost exactly ten years ago (Oct. 19, 1996). The race was held at Huber Woods. My notes on the results sheet for that day read, “Weather conditions – torrential rain – 55- 60 degrees; Course condition – flooded”. I remember running the wooded trail in ankle deep water and feeling like I was breathing water rather than air. The finish line was set up in the wooden lean-to shed on the edge of the parking area so that our officials ( Colleen York and Lisa Bazley) could stay dry. The most lasting image of that day, however, was watching Cliff Russell of the Sandy Hookers riding his mountain bike across the Oceanic Bridge and up the long hill to Huber Woods before the race. He went on to finish in 5th place and cooled down by riding his bike home.

The final race of our series will be this Saturday (Nov. 4) at Tatum Park, Middletown.
Please park in the Holland Road lot. We will use the old start in the fields in front of the parking lot. Individual season awards and the Woodland Elf team trophy will be given out after the race. See you all on Saturday.

Saturday’s race at Holmdel Park brought out 133 runners which was a record turnout for the 26 year history of this series. Tim Ensign of Green’s Pond came all the way from Chattanooga, Tennessee and was the winner in 17:10 over Wilson Martinez of the Sandy Hookers. Tim was a dominant runner in the league during the 1990’s and still looks very fit.
Jill Evarts of Green’s Pond won a close race over Terra Sarnacki in a very good 19:50. Terra was clocked in 19:56 also an excellent time for this challenging course.
I sat out this race and worked at the finish line recording results. I’m always amazed when I see the expressions on the faces of the runners as they approach the finish. The looks of agony and strain really convey the effort required to complete the Holmdel Park course. You can all be proud of yourselves for finishing this one.
The team race was won by Green’s Pond. They were led by first places in the men’s and women’s races. This was followed up by very strong finishes by Adele McDonough and Jen Beck and by Masters Mike Tully and Peter Avakian.
Bonus points won by Merrell Noden, Ed Smith, and Pete Evarts secured the win over the Sandy Hookers.

Saturday Oct. 28 is our annual Halloween Race run at Thompson Park. This is “the run for the pies” (pies to winners of age groups). There will be other prizes

and food for all. We will be using a new start for this race to accommodate our larger field of runners. Please park in the activity center lot and sign in at Marlu lake. See you all on Saturday.

SAC Women win Gold in Saratoga

Shore AC 40-49 women take the Gold and SAC men’s 70 win silver.
USATF Masters 5 K XC National championships. Sunday October 15, Saratoga Springs,
46 degrees.
Course; rolling hills,grass start,pavement,and large gravel.

Chris Harkins (48) only SAC competitor in the 40-49 category. Harkins runs 17:22 in 23 place. His race had the first six competitors go under 16:00. Seventh place was 16:00 flat in a tough 5K.
SAC men’s 50-59 team with medal hopes slips when Harry Nolan loses his shoe in the race. Running in the front pack someone stepped on his heel. After attempting to run without a shoe, the gravel was too painful and he went back for his shoe.After retrieving his shoe,Harry finished in 22:31. Bill Butler on the 70-79 team took a bad fall at the 2 mile got up and finished for the team. Only SAC runner to make top 50 age graded results was Bill Scholl (55) in 18:04 for 5th place. Best place performance was Dick Hill, 4th 70-74 in 22:45.

Saturday’s race was the second year the league has run at Wolf Hill Recreation Area. However, this venue has been used over the years for cross country racing by Long Branch and Shore Regional High Schools. Monmouth University runners train there regularly also. It is a gem of a park hidden away next to Monmouth Race Track in Oceanport, NJ and is surprisingly challenging. The two lap course with four hay bale jumps is similar to the courses run in Europe during their winter XC season.

Seth Holland of Hoboken was an easy winner over Jay McGovern of the Shore AC.
Seth’s time of 20:18 was excellent for the rolling 3.7 mile route. Adele McDonough of the Green’s Pond Harriers led the women’s race in 24:53, seven seconds ahead of Catherine Satzke of Sandy Hook.

Hoboken Harriers won the team race today ahead of Shore AC. We have had three different teams win in the first three races. The battle for the Woodland Elf Trophy is very close and will probably come down to the final race on Nov. 4.

Our next race is Saturday Oct 21 at Holmdel Park. We will be running over the 5k high school course. See you all on Saturday morning.

The Shore A.C.'s Women's Team captured the USATF National 5km Cross-Country 40-49 Team Championship at the championship meet held at Saratoga Spa State Park in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The team consisted of Jill Evarts, Middletown (19:07), Lauren Rhatigan, Ship Bottom (19:37), Christine Gaeta, Middletown, (19:57), Liz Ludwigson, formerly of South Brunswick, now Norristown, Pa. (20:00) and Christine Murphy, Pt. Pleasant (21:43). Their score of 20 (5,7,8 + 9,21) narrowly defeated Finger Lakes, NY Runners Club's 21 points (3,6,12).

National One Hour Racewalk

On a breezy, crisp New England day, the Shore AC trio of John Fredericks, Tom Quattrocchi and John Soucheck finished second in the men's open team competition to the Maine Racewalkers, 32,490m to 32,152m at the National Open, Junior and Masters One Hour Racewalk Championshops in Waltham, MA. Showing two contrasting approaches to fielding a team, Maine Racewalkers scored two junior athletes, while the Shore squad was entirely made up of masters athletes. John Soucheck led the Shore racewalkers with 11,865m to finish fourth overall and first master(M40-44), John Fredericks had 10,176m for 11th overall and 3rdM55-59 with Tom Quattrocchi following close behind in 13th, 4th M55-59 covering 10,111m when time was called.
For John Fredericks the race was his second national championship race in as many weeks. Fredericks was 14th overall and 1st M55-59 at the National 5km Racewalk in Kingsport, TN on October 7 finsihing in 28:32. Also representing Shore in Kingsport was M80-84 champ Bob Mimm with a 38:40.

Today’s race was run over a modified Tatum Park course due to downed trees from a recent storm. The course itself has been changed 3 or 4 times over the past 20 years but the trail leading up through the woods to Red Hill Road has been a constant feature in all of the variations. Recently the Park system fenced off this section and we felt it would be too dangerous to include it in the race. The service road hill leading to the top of the course was a challenge and certainly made up for the deleted uphill climb through the woods.

Andrew Hanko celebrated his 18th birthday by winning his second race in a row beating Lawrence Schau of Monmouth University by 6 seconds. The cool, overcast weather didn’t discourage anyone from running as we had another large field of runners for the second week in a row (119 finishers). The team scores were very close again with Monmouth University edging a resurging Green’s Pond Harrier team by 4 points.
The Hawk Harriers dominated the open men’s competition but Green’s Pond had the superior women this time. Jill Evarts, Adele McDonough, and Jen Beck all turned in sterling performances.

Congratulations to everyone who ran on Saturday morning at Thompson Park. We had a perfect morning for cross country racing, sunny and 65 degrees F. The start and finish were modified due to the new pavement over the bridge area but we are working on a new start and finish area in cooperation with the park officials that will make the Thompson course the best in the area.

Seventeen year old Andrew Hanko, of Trinity Christian HS in Montvale, NJ, showed the older men and women that there is no substitute for youth. He easily defeated a very good field and looked pretty fresh at the finish line. I spoke with Andrew and his father before the race and pointed out the course to them. Andrew ran the entire course easily as a warmup, ran the race in a quick 15:35, then ran the course again for a cool down! His school does not have a cross country team so he runs in open meets and has played soccer in the past. He’s hoping to continue his running in college at the U.S. Naval Academy, University of Pennsylvania, or Villanova. All of these schools have great running traditions and I think Andrew will be a welcome addition to anyone of them.
Them team race was one of the closest in my memory. The Sandy Hookers re-emerged as a power to be reckoned with as they narrowly beat the Shore AC by 3 points. Five points behind SAC was the Jersey Shore RC and Hoboken Harriers only 2 ponts behind JSRC. Every place counts in cross country racing and team races can be won or lost by just one runner passing another at the finish line.
Tatum Park is next up on our schedule (Sat. 10/7). Remember to park in the lot at the Holland Road activity center entrance. See you all Saturday morning.

Fall 2006 Cross-Country Series

Greetings Harriers,

The 2006 X-Country season will begin on Saturday September 30th at Thompson Park. The Fall schedule will be as follows:

Sat. September 30 Thompson Park
Sat. October 7 Tatum Park
Sat. October 14 Wolf Hill Recreation Area
Sat. October 21 Holmdel Park (awaiting confirmation)
Sat. October 28 Thompson Park (Halloween Run for the Pies)
Sat. November 4 Tatum Park

All races will start promptly at 9:00 am. Registration and course review will begin at 8:15 am. Individual and team competition will continue as in years past and prizes for best overall performances will be presented after the final race including the legendary "Woodland Elf" trophy to the winning team.
Entry fee is $6.00 per race. A rise in entry fee this year is due to an increase in the Park's user fee for the various courses we run.

68th Annual USATF National Championship 40km Racewalk

OCEAN - Little Silver's John Soucheck and Lakewood's Dorit Attias led Shore area finishers in the 68th annual USA National Championship 40-kilometer racewalk, held Sept. 10 at Joe Palaia Park, Ocean Township.
Soucheck, competing for Shore AC, placed third in the men's division back of winner Ray Sharp of Houghton, Mich.
Attias, representing the Walk USA club, finished second in the women's race, trailing only Heidi Hauch of Scottsdale, Arizona. En route, Attias set an American age 40-44 record at the 25-kilometer distance.
Shore AC, the host team, won both the men's Open and Masters team titles.
Thirty-one starters dwindled down to 17 (13 men and 4 women) finishers at the 40km distance.
Ray Sharp (who had won this race back in 1982) started fast, recording 9:14 for the first 2 km lap and 48:16 at 10km, at which time a pit stop was required. He passed 20 km in 1:40:34, but began struggling a couple laps later. With 2:34:30 at 30 km, he was 10:26 up on Varsano's Chocolates teammate Paul Schwartzberg. This lead steadily dwindled to the finish, with Sharp recording 3:37:19 to Schwartzberg's 3:39:20.
In the women's race, Attias steadily built a lead which reached 1:28 over Heidi Hauch at 12km. Hauch just as steadily whittled away at it through the next 14km, at which point Attias started losing steam with Hauch easily pulling away to win by 8:44.

Four Masters record results were achieved (based on current accepted records.),
Dorit Attias, women age 40-44 at 25 km, 2:37:15 (US record)
Leon Jasionowski, men, age 60-64 at 40 km, 3:56:08 (US record)
Bob Mimm, men age 80-84 at 40 km, 6:02:12 (US record)
Janet Higbie, women age 60-64 at 50 km, with 6:45:01 (World and US record.)

Downtown Westfield 5K

Shore A.C. was well represented, if not in depth, then in quality, at last night’s Downtown Westfield 5K. First among finishers was Dave Hoch, who posted an 18:58. Next was Wayne Baker, in 23:13, whose relative youth made him the only Shore A.C. participant not to take a top 10 placing in his age group. Close behind was Ralph Garfield, whose 23:36 meant that for the first time since his recent 70th birthday, he didn’t win his age group. Sixty-nine year old Dick Hill ran a 24:01. Finally, Elliott Denman, walked the race in 39:25.

Records Fall At All Comers Meet

Tuesday July 18,2006. Ocean Twp. HS. Ninety-five degrees and 90% humidity did not stop SAC Masters from setting 4 club records.
To start the meet SAC Masters 40-49 smashed the 4x1500 record by over a minute. Last years team of Tom Zarra, Bob Andrews, Dave Zurheide and Gerard Pearlberg set the record at 19:16.7. The heat was not going to stop Mark Mellea, who organized the record run. Pearlberg,4:25.41 ran the opening leg and put the team ahead of last years record run. Chris Harkins 4:37.15 added to the lead. Mellea 4:37.30, and a strong anchor leg by Pat Dolan, 4:25.80 assured the record run in 18:05.66.
The last event of the evening,4x200, had 4 teams in the masters section. Three SAC teams set new club records.The winning team SAC Masters 40-49 ran 1:39.91. Pat Dolan 25.66,Bob Andrews 25.83, Pearlberg 26.00 and Keith Davis in a blazing 22.42 anchor leg. Third place team SAC 50-59 ran record time of 2:02.02. Lead off Don Passman 29.01, Tony Plaster 28.26, Dave Freidman 31.43 and SAC President Walter MacGowan 33.32. Walt's first 200 since HS.
SAC 60-69 team had two amazing 200 runners. Lead off leg Nate Byrd 68 years old in 2 weeks,ran 29.17 followed by John MacDonald, 31.37, is 70 years old. John Kuhi 35.78 and Bob Palle 34.86 completed the team for a new record of 2:11.18.

FRANK BUDD TRACK AND FIELD MEET

ASBURY PARK, N.J. - Twelve-year-old Ajee Wilson of Neptune. N.J. won the women's one-mile run in 5:05.2 and 43-year-old Gerard Pearlberg of Brielle, N.J. won the men's masters mile in 4:42.8, an All-America qualifying time, in feature events of the Frank Budd Track and Field Meet Saturday, July 15th, at Asbury Park High School Stadium.
The meet honored Budd, the Asbury Park High School and Villanova University graduate and 1960 USA Olympian who set the world record of 9.2 seconds for the 100-yard dash at the National AAU Championships in 1961. For Budd, who now lives in Mount Laurel, N.J. and is slowed by multiple sclerosis, it was his first visit to his former school in many years.

On July 1 in Albany, NY Shore AC's Panse Geer won the women's 5000m walk in 31:31.80 at the USATF East Region Open Track & Field Championships. Kristina Bonfiglio was second behind Panse in 33:01.73, while also taking third in the steeple (14:33.41). Congratulations also to Shore's Vinny Insingo who spun the platter out to 51.71m (169'-8") to a discus win, while finishing second in the shot at 15.40m (50'-6.25").

Lake Takanassee Summer Series

Every summer, the Shore Athletic Club hosts the Lake Takanassee Summer Race Series. They've done so since 1964, and the list of running royalty who have run the course at Lake Tak is long. It includes: (waiting for some info)

Dr. George Sheehan, the noted running author and philosopher, considered Lake Takanassee to be his running home. He made many references to it throughout his books. Sheehan is remembered with this plaque on the north side of the Lake. Members of the Sheehan family often visit and sometimes run in the races.

St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church has graciously permitted us to use their auxiliary parking throughout the history of the races. Their landmark red church has been used as a landmark for generations of shore area runners.

Frank Budd Track & Field Meet

The First Annual Frank Budd Track & Field Meet will be held at the Asbury Park High School Track and Field Oval on July 15th, 2006. The meet will begin at 9:00 AM. For those of you who may not be aware, Budd set the world record for 100 yards in 1962 by running a 9.2 second mark.

On Monday night, a young lady was at Lake Takanassee dressed in a Crazylegs Marathon tee shirt. For those of you who aren't aware, this race, held in 1971, later became the Leggs (and I think Avon, for a time) Mini-Marathon. I looked up and found that there were 78 racers in that event, and I'm sure there aren't too many of those shirts that have survived the intervening 35 years.

I'll always remember Art as a smiling face competing in and hanging around the various racewalks.

TORA HARRIS: USA National Champion - High Jump

Shore AC's Tora Harris was crowned National Champion in the High Jump at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Indianapolis. Tora's winning jump was 2.33 meters - 7'-7.75". Congratulations and well done to Tora and all the Shore athletes who competed at the Nationals.

New Jersey Senior Olympics (Revised)

Niagara Falls 10km Racewalk

The June 3rd Niagara Falls 10km Racewalk served as the USATF National 10km Senior Racewalk Championship (not Juniors or Masters) and the Eastern Regional Championship at all levels. Walkers turned 8 laps of the 1250m Goat Island course. John Soucheck finished 10th, 2nd M40-44, in 50:29. One of a few going on to 20km, he was the first to complete that distance in 1:43:29. Fran Emanuel was the W60-64 champ in 1:10:05. Panse Geer was disqualified.

Forerunner 201 Personal Trainer

Hi Shore AC Teammates

" I recently purchased the Forerunner 201 personal trainer made by Garmin from the local EMS store in Eatontown. It has a lot of bells and whistles but it is really unique. In addition to clocking the pace and distance traveled through its GPS feature it has a navigational aid. I like this particular feature because it allows you to find your way back to the starting point. Normally this is not a big issue when you live in the US since most people speak English, but many of us do travel abroad, and it is easy to get lost sometimes and not knowing the local language can be frustrating. Since we are going to Eastern Europe on Father's Day I wanted to be sure that I could find my way around Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Vienna without working out with my Berlitz in hand. The device costs $150.00 but at various times of the year EMS will discount it for Club Members some 20 percent. (Perhaps some of the discount electronic dealers might have it cheaper.) The battery life is 14 hours before it needs to be recharged but it is well worth the money. In a local 4 mile race I curiously checked the accuracy of the course and wow the distance at the finish line was 4.03 miles. The difference may have accounted for my twists and turns on the course. I heartedly recommend it for the serious athlete as a good silent training partner."

Al Saner Racewalks

Turnout was good for the Al Saner Racewalks and Al was on hand to cheer on the walkers once more. The 20km racewalk was the third stop on the USATF-NJ Racewalk Grand Prix. Shore AC's John Soucheck and Richard Stockton College' s Rich Leuttchau walked together through the first 10km on the Pt. Pleasant Boro HS track, reached in 50:58, before the wind and rising temperatures began to take their toll. Soucheck decelerated the least to take the win in 1:45:25 to Leuttchau's 1:51:08. Shore's Tom Quattrocchi finished strong to take third (2:06:46). Marie Paul was the women's champion (2:23:14). Solomiya Login (54:23) and Erik Litt (56:25) led the women's and men's 10km field respectively, with Shore's Panse Geer turning in a 62:52 for second female. Bill May (30:24) and Alison Snochowski (31:48) led those going 5km.

USATF-NJ Masters 5 mile Road Championship

Shore AC Masters road runners ran well on a hilly course in Summit this Sunday 5/7/06. SAC 40-49 and 60-69 teams placed 3rd in a very competitive USATF-NJ Masters Road Championship. Missing some of SAC top 50-59 runners, they placed 6th in the age group. If the race was two days later Mike Mooney(29.30)would have won his age group and changed the team results dramatically. Team members could drop down one age group to score for both groups. Two fifty guys not at Summit, Harry Nolan(31:18)and Henry Mercer(30:24) ran Rumson 5 mile. Mooney led the 40-49 team with Rich Caponigro(31:00),Dave Hoch(31:08),John Liptak(31.11),Tom Zarra(32:13)and Bob Haithcock(32:25.)
Dave Hoch(31:08)led the 50-59 team with Haithcock,Kuhi,Gross,Leonard,and Roche scoring.
John Kuhi(36.43) brought in the SAC 60-69 team, followed by Dave Gross(37:56), John Leonard(38:45)and Hector Roche(39:03)
Individual Age group SAC best was John Leonard, Dave Hoch and Mike Mooney, all placed fourth in their 5 year age group.

Penn Relays Racewalks

The racewalks opened Saturday's Penn Relays competition. Aided by near perfect weather conditions, Shore AC's John Soucheck finished first in the Masters Men's 10,000m racewalk and 5th overall (Men's Olympic Development, Masters and Juniors are competed together) in 48:35.86, his quickest over the 10km distance since the 2000 Penn Relays. Rich Leuttchau took 3 minutes off his 2005 Penn Relays debut to finish in 49:35.41, which placed him 4th in the Olympic Development section, 7th overall. Kristina Bonfiglio was Shore AC's rep in the Women's 5000m racewalk, placing 15th among junior women (31:34.97). Visit www.racewalk.com for race reports and a few photos.

Donna Lane

As many of you already know, tragedy befell the local running community yesterday.
Donna Lane, a very close friend and athlete of Shore AC runner and Stinger Coach Tom Schaefer, was killed yesterday morning a block from her home whilst riding her brand new motor cycle.

Donna was a frequent attendee at our Saturday morning workouts and recently under Tom’s guidance achieved her dream of completing a marathon in Washington DC at the Marine Corps marathon. Donna was an extremely kind person and devoted wife and mother. A highly talented massage therapist, this summer, Donna was due to take up a very prestigious position at the Olympic training center. Last year, Donna was recruited to work on the athletes of the world famous Cirque Du Soleil.
We are extremely and deeply saddened by this tragedy; Donna will be greatly missed by the running community and beyond.
Funeral arrangement details will be passed along as they become known.

Donna is survived by her husband Vinny and two daughters, both of whom are currently in College.

Record attendance Friday (39K+) watch Shore AC Masters "Have a Good Day"
The team of Greg Foster 11.66,Phil Bujalski 11.93,Rick Lapp 12.38,and Keith Davis 11.44 ran(47.41)second fastest 4x100 in club history. Last years team of Greg, Keith, Phil and Tony Plaster broke a 20 year old SAC Club record,(40-49)in the 4x100 (47.27).The old record set at Rutgers Relays in 1985 was 47.53. SAC team of Matt Brown 11.52 ,Leon Trout 11.90, John Kuhi 11.91,and Frank Haviland 12.20.
The SAC women set a new club record in the,(40-49)4x400 of 4:58.00 and winning 3rd place Penn Relays medals. Lead off leg Beth Zebuth 64.88, Chris Murphy 75.90, Wendy Glassman 82.07,and Theresa Marciani 75.15. On Saturday the men 40-49 came close to club record of 3:35.04 set back in 1989 as they ran 3:39.54. The SAC team of Patrick Dolan 56.79, Gerard Pearlberg 55.99,Keith Davis 51.97,and Bob Andrews 54.79.
On friday the Men (50-59):3:41.66 lead off Rick Lapp 57.81,Tony Plaster 60.82, Harry Nolan 63.46,(Harry will be 60 next March)and Bill Clifton 64.74. In the same race the Men(60-69):5:05.87 (2nd place) John MacDonald 68.74, John Kuhi 72.60, John Saarmann 71.07, and Mauro Alitzio 93.46. In the Masters 100 dash (45-49)Phil Bujalski ran 12.52. Phil will be age 50 in two months and looking forward to competing at the T&F Nationals August 3-7 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Capt. Ron Zinn Memorial Races

Racers faced wet and windy conditions for the 41st Annual Capt. Ron Zinn Memorial Races, held to honor the 2 time US Olympian in the 20km Walk (1960 & 1964) who lost his life in Vietnam. In the 5km run, Jeff Propert (17:37) and Briana Jackucewicz (18:41) dominated the competition. Brian Hill (19:27) and Adle McDonough (20:58) were second. John Soucheck cruised through the 10km racewalk (and the puddled course) to a 52:22 win over Tom Quattrocchi (1:02:35). In a closer finish, Dorit Attias (1:03:09) prevailed over Shore AC's Panse Geer (1:03:45).

World Racewalk Cup Trials

This past Sunday a contingent of two represented Shore AC at the World Racewalk Cup Trials in Hauppauge, NY. John Soucheck hit the 10km mark in 51:28 before succumbing to the windy conditions and finishing the 20km distance in 1:45:07 for 14th place. John Fredericks met the displeasure of the judges and was disqualified. Kevin Eastler (USAF) won in 1:25:15.

In other weekend action, Rich Leuttchau and Panse Geer were 3000m walk winners at the Osprey Open in 13:59.57 and 17:29.24 respectively. Thanks go to Richard Stockton College for including the walks in their meets.
